How NCTS Phase 5 affects your supply chain

Blog

NCTS Phase 5 is now in effect and is an important milestone for anyone handling international transport within the EU. The new version of NCTS (New Computerised Transit System) aims to streamline and ensure a higher quality of customs clearance with improved data collection and uniform processes.

What is NCTS Phase 5?

NCTS Phase 5 is the latest update of the EU's common computerised transit system used to manage import and export declarations within the EU customs territory. By collecting detailed information on shipments, the system is designed to improve security and efficiency, allowing for more robust risk assessment even before goods reach EU borders.

A key change is that new final tests are no longer required, but companies can use the basic data already available in the system. This creates an opportunity to conduct your own tests via the so-called Business Test Environment.

What does NCTS Phase 5 mean for your supply chain?

Plan well in advance
The introduction of NCTS Phase 5 means that your internal processes need to be adapted to ensure that all necessary information is collected and submitted on time. This may affect how you plan and manage your shipments – especially if you import goods by air from third countries. Previous data handling in the old system will also need to be upgraded to meet the new requirements.

Avoid costs and delays
By implementing the new digital processes and specifications, you will achieve a more transparent and efficient supply chain. Earlier submission of your data leads to better risk assessment, which in turn reduces the risk of delays in customs clearance. At the same time, it can contribute to cost savings by avoiding extra fees and problems caused by delays.

Adapting your systems
Not submitting all the necessary information correctly and on time can lead to delays and potentially increased costs. Therefore, it is important to review and adapt your systems and processes.
