Arrival of Carbon Destroyer 1 at Port of Esbjerg

The first European-built dedicated offshore DP2 CO2 carrier has arrived in Esbjerg, with Blue Water’s Port Agency team managing the port call

Blue Water’s Port Agency team in Esbjerg recently managed the arrival of Royal Wagenborg’s Carbon Destroyer 1 at the Port of Esbjerg. The vessel will carry out Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) operations in the Danish North Sea. Measuring 149.95 metres in length with a beam of 15.95 metres, the vessel is the first European-built dedicated offshore DP2 CO2 carrier.

Our Port Agency team handled a smooth and efficient arrival of the vessel at the Port of Esbjerg. This included pre-arrival planning and coordination with port authorities, the terminal and all service providers, arrangement of pilotage, towage and linesmen for safe arrival and berthing, handling of port documentation, clearances and compliance requirements, as well as close liaison with the vessel, owners and all stakeholders throughout the call.

“This operation demonstrated the strength of our Port Agency team in handling complex and high-profile port calls. From early planning to final departure, the team coordinated well between all parties involved. Supporting a project of this scale and importance within carbon capture and storage is something we are proud to be part of,” adds Klaus Odby Jensen, Global Head of Port Agency.

Greensand Future project

The vessel will support the INEOS-led Greensand Future project, a ground-breaking CCS initiative in the Danish North Sea. The project will facilitate the large-scale marine transport of liquid CO2 to the Greensand Future storage site in the Danish North Sea, becoming the first operational CO2 storage facility in the European Union.

For the marine transport of liquid CO2 to the offshore facility in the North Sea, a specialised vessel design with significant intake and station keeping capabilities is required. Blue Water identified Royal Wagenborg to play this key role by building a purpose-modified CO2 carrier for the Greensand Future project.

Based on Wagenborg's award-winning Easymax design, the Carbon Destroyer 1 represents a major step forward in the development of CCS marine transport in Europe. The vessel is designed to carry about 5.000 ton of liquified CO2.
